The study will be conducted using the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster, a model organism in which a large amount of information is known about the neuroanatomy and physiology of motor systems. The experiments will employ a series of behavioral assays and electrophysiological recordings from identified motor neurons in the fly brain. Aim 1 is to characterize the properties of sensory inputs to motor neurons controlling head and limb movements in order to better understand how these neurons are activated by natural stimuli and the mechanisms underlying motor behaviors such as escape, freezing, and pursuit. Aim 2 is to establish how motor neurons are activated during escape and flight behaviors to provide insight into the neural basis of the control of these behaviors. Aim 3 is to determine the molecular basis for the activity of a set of GABAergic neurons that control locomotion and courtship behavior. Aim 4 is to identify the functional roles of specific synaptic connections between the brain and peripheral nerves in mediating escape behavior. To achieve these goals, I will conduct a combination of electrophysiological and behavioral experiments in freely moving flies.
